The Wild Desert Joshua Tree Experience is an open-ended retreat created for those who want more than a vacation—but don’t necessarily want to complete a Yoga Teacher Training.
Hosted alongside our Kootenay Yoga School YTT programs in Joshua Tree, California, this immersive experience invites you to step away from ordinary routines and spend meaningful time surrounded by yoga, community, sunshine, desert landscapes, movement, learning, creativity, and the unmistakable stillness of the high desert.
Rather than arriving for a tightly scheduled retreat with a predetermined beginning and end, guests are invited to settle in, participate, explore, and stay awhile.
Join morning asana and meditation, enjoy time for personal reflection and study, connect with an evolving community of yogis, explore Joshua Tree and the surrounding desert, wander beneath wide-open skies, rest deeply, and create a retreat experience that reflects what you need.
You may come to deepen your yoga practice.
You may come to reset.
You may be craving adventure, creativity, connection, sunshine, personal study, desert solitude—or simply enough time and space to hear yourself think again.
There is no expectation that you become a yoga teacher.
The invitation is simply to immerse yourself.
Live alongside a vibrant Yoga Teacher Training community while maintaining the freedom to create an experience of your own—balancing opportunities for yoga, learning, ceremony, and connection with spacious days for desert exploration, personal practice, adventure, reflection, stargazing, and rest.
Practice in the morning. Wander in the afternoon. Gather beneath the stars. Let the desert fill in everything in between.

An Immersive, Healthy & Sober Retreat Environment — Step into an intentionally alcohol- and substance-free retreat space centered around wellness, meaningful connection, yoga, healthy living, personal growth, creativity, and the freedom to truly immerse yourself in the experience.
Desert mornings. Spacious afternoons. Fireside evenings. Endless skies.
Joshua Tree is a place where rugged desert landscapes, iconic Joshua trees, enormous rock formations, endless skies, artistic culture, and an unmistakable sense of stillness come together to create an incredible setting for stepping away from everyday life.
Our retreat offers the opportunity to experience the quieter rhythm of the California high desert while still being close enough to explore the unique communities, landscapes, and experiences that make Joshua Tree such a special destination.
The desert feels wonderfully spacious and removed from ordinary life, yet there is so much to discover. Spend your free time exploring Joshua Tree National Park, wandering through local shops and galleries, finding a favourite café, hiking among incredible rock formations, discovering the area's creative communities, or simply heading out with no particular destination and seeing where the desert takes you.
Joshua Tree National Park & Desert Wilderness — Explore one of California's most iconic landscapes, filled with Joshua trees, fascinating rock formations, hiking trails, scenic drives, and seemingly endless stretches of desert.
Incredible Sunrises & Sunsets — Watch the desert change colour as the sun moves across the landscape, with quiet mornings and spectacular golden-hour evenings becoming part of the experience.
Hiking & Outdoor Exploration — Discover trails, rock formations, desert viewpoints, nature walks, and countless opportunities to spend time outside.
Local Cafés, Shops & Desert Towns — Explore Joshua Tree, Yucca Valley, and the surrounding high-desert communities, each offering their own collection of cafés, vintage shops, local restaurants, markets, and wonderfully eclectic desert character.
Art, Music & Creative Culture — Joshua Tree has long attracted artists, musicians, makers, dreamers, and people searching for something a little different. Discover galleries, installations, live music, local events, and the wonderfully unconventional creative spirit of the desert.
Optional Desert Adventures — Depending on the season and your interests, spend your free time hiking, rock climbing, exploring the National Park, visiting local attractions, discovering neighbouring desert communities, or planning your own Southern California adventure.
Fireside Evenings & Incredible Stargazing — When the sun disappears, the desert offers an entirely different kind of magic. Gather around the fire, enjoy the stillness, connect with your retreat community, or simply look up at the vast desert sky.
Space to Explore—and Space to Do Nothing — Joshua Tree can be adventurous, but it can also be wonderfully quiet. There is just as much value in spending an afternoon beside the pool, reading in the sunshine, journaling, resting, or watching the landscape change around you.
One of the most special parts of an immersive stay is having enough time to experience Joshua Tree beyond a quick weekend visit.
There is time to find a favourite trail, return to the little coffee shop you discovered, watch more than one desert sunrise, explore the National Park without rushing, listen to live music, meet interesting people, sit around the fire, and gradually allow your days to take on a slower rhythm.
Some days may be filled with yoga, ceremony, adventure, learning, and community. Others might involve a long desert walk, an afternoon by the pool, exploring a neighbouring town, chasing the sunset, or simply sitting beneath a Joshua tree with nowhere else you need to be.
Joshua Tree isn't simply where the retreat happens—the desert becomes part of the retreat itself.
Our Wild Desert Joshua Tree Retreat is designed to offer freedom, flexibility, and the opportunity to experience Kootenay Yoga School at your own pace. There are no traditional fixed retreat dates. Days at Kootenay Yoga School are shaped by movement, learning, reflection, connection, nourishing food, personal growth, sunshine, and the wonderfully spacious energy of the California high desert.
While retreat guests have significantly more freedom in their schedules than our YTT students, everyone shares the same property, practices, meals, and community. We therefore ask retreat guests to honour and contribute to the peaceful atmosphere of the school.
Spend your morning practicing with us and then head into Joshua Tree National Park. Relax beside the pool, wander through a desert town, find a local café, read in the sunshine, chase a desert sunset, gather around the fire, or simply enjoy having nowhere else you need to be.

Our property is a healthy, peaceful, alcohol- and substance-free environment where people can learn, practice, connect, recharge, and grow. We ask everyone who joins us to approach the experience with kindness, respect, mindfulness, openness, and consideration for the community around them.
You don't need to be completing a Yoga Teacher Training to become part of the experience. You simply need to arrive ready to respect the space, embrace the desert rhythm, connect with the community, and allow yourself to experience something a little different.
Stay for a day. Stay for a week. Stay for a month. Your dates are yours—the desert takes it from there.
